The 350th Royal Society birthday
Posted on December 14th, 2009 No commentsIn 2010 the UK Royal Society will celebrate its 350th birthday. Founded in 1660, the Royal Society is the oldest science academy of the world. Its motto “Nullius in verba” nothing in words perfectly explains the aim of the Society: nothing is true without an experimental demonstration. For this reason, from the beginning the Royal Society granted scientists with its prestigious fellowships to guarantee the Britannic scientific advances.
Then, also foreign scientists could gain fellowship and awards and now almost 1400 fellowship and foreign members belong to the Society, and amongst them 60 are Nobel laureates. To celebrate this important event, an interesting website has been prepared. TrailBlazing is an interactive timeline where are collected the most important projects founded by the Royal Society from 1660 up to date. It’s really curious the parallelism between scientific discoveries and history, because it allows us to correlate famous historical events studied at the school with important scientific advances. It’s astonishing the human genius for all the experimental observations performed in the past without powered tools or other sophisticated equipment. So, please visit this website http://trailblazing.royalsociety.org open your mind and enjoy yourself!
